I own a very extensive collection of folding knives designed for self defence as well as possibly for daily use: these include anything from inexpensive folding hunting knives to oriental specialities to aristocratic European weapons. Compared to these knives, I like Cold Steel TI Lite quite a lot. It is simple, light for daily carry, good proportion of folded length to blade length (I have 6 in model), and overall effective for desired purpose. Handle fits the hand and feels quite well but ergonomically it is rather marginal. I have a real problem with the steel quality. It does not hold the edge at all. I know that it was not really meant for cutting but since I have it on me all the time, sometimes I need to cut a piece of bread or cheese. I do not understand how could this knife loose its edge so fast. I own many Cold Steel knives but did not have this problem with any of them. I use sharpening tools of all kinds from simple to sophisticated stone sets to steels to professional top quality electric sharpening machines. After my TI Lite lost the factory edge, I never managed to get it sharp to my standards again. I am considering to move to another Cold Steel knife.

Don't listen to the "Nike" guy that tried to use this knife as a gardening tool. Getting disapointed with this knife because it dosen't cut tree's well is like being mad at a fork because it sucks for eating soup. Use garden tools for out in the yard and weapons for self defence.

This is a Defensive knife for self protection. I am a Police Officer and have carried one of these for about a year as a backup for my service pistol and overall its a good knife.

AUS8 isn't anything special but its a decent steel that sharpens back easy enough. The knife has a built in "wave" feature that allows very rapid deployment from the pocket.
The handle could be a little more ergonomic but it was styled to look like an old switchblade. It does look pretty nasty. Holding this knife leaves no doubt that it would do some nasty damage.

If you want a EDC for everyday chores or opening boxes and such look for another knife. If you want a knife for protection or as a backup weapon for a gun consider this knife. I would reccomend that you check out the knife in person because the handle style isn't for everyone.

Gentlemen, tasteful disagreement is one thing, but these comments is starting to detract from the value here. As such, I'm no longer going to approve comments in this exchange unless they are directly related to the review of the knife. No more personal attacks. Thank you.

Don't call me "cowboy" you don't know me and as such you don't get to call me by any kind of nickname....And I AM a Police Officer. Atlanta Police Department. Look it up.Now I cannot help it if you missused your knife... You where using the wrong tool for a job. Secondly are you even sure you got a real Cold Steel knife? There are many counterfit knifes go to their website and you can see some examples. If not maybe you just got a lemon. But I own 5 different Cold Steel knives including this one, all of them have been tough and preformed well.

Cowboy, do you know what kind of plant is tree of heaven - this Mr. Officer is a tree famous with it's very soft timber. Repeat, I make only one cut, only one, with this "solid" knife and the result - damage folder. You claim you are policeman. I don't know cowboy - you are specialist, but i will never go into fight with such kind of blade or depend on it for "self protection". By the way - if you are so sure in your Ti-lite, in Cold Steel site you can watch hard uses test of the knife - repeat it

This knife was my big disappointment - first it is definitely not cheap and for the money the presentment was not good. I tying to cut a stem from Tree of Heaven with approximately 2 centimeters diameter. After that, there was a 1 mm vertical play of blade. If must be honest there was no damage on blade or any manifest for age loosing. However, Tree of Heaven is with very soft timber and the vertical play for knife with such price, for me is absolutely unacceptable

I live in the United States where people have the right to defend themselfs. The fact is that this knife was designed with self defence in mind. That is why they call this style of knife a "tactical folder".And if you are justified in defending youself you will not go to prison... At least not here in the US.

Sorry for my spelling mistake - I mean "edge loosing". I don't know where you leave, but in my region if you stab anyone or try to use knife for "self-defense" you will go in prison. I'm always hold the statement, the knife is primary a tool not weapon. By the way, I try the same test with one China folding knife (cost 10 $) - no blade play. Enjoy your "sold blade"

I can tell english is a second language for you, maybe you misunderstood what this knife is for. It is designed for stabbing/fighting. It is not ment for cutting "tree of heaven" or any other plants, also nobody knows what you mean by "manifest and for age loosing". That statment dosen't make any sence. This is a self defence knife. When used as such it is a solid blade.

i've owned evey 4" model ti lite ever made since they came ouy with the original titanium model several years ago. the zytel model is my favorite and i never am without one. for a stilleto style knive they very durable. i have cut the door knob off my front door before after locking myself out. did'nt take but a second either. i don't cre for the snag and pull method of deployment but i can open it faster than an assisted with a flick of my thumb. i've heard people having problems opening and closing them but i think thats an operater defect. i've owned at least 20 of these knives i carry one awhile and give it away, i've never had a problem but i will say this out of the box they are razor sharp but you need to have some sharpening skill or know someopne who does cause they are hard to touch up to out of the box sharpness.

This knife was disappointing for me. At the $40 price range, AUS8 falls short of other offering in VG10, 154CM, and even S30V.

In handle retention is very good when the knife is new, to the point where it is impossible to open the knife using the poorly designed thumb stud. A must-do modification would be to remove some of the zytel around the thumb stud to allow easier access.

The knife is well balanced and feels like it would make a decent thrower. Lockup is solid.

Comment by Mojo   04/03/2012
First just to clarify S30V is currently the new darling child steel of the knife world and is considered "better" than VG10 or 153MC. You also won't get any of these steels in a $40 price range for a knife of this size.$40 is more likely to get you 8Cr13MOV (kershaw) or 420HC (buck) both while useable and easy to sharpen are considered "inferior" chinese steels.AUS8 is actually a pretty good mid level steel for a knife of this cost.
