I purchased this knife on clearance at a local 'Big Mart' store. It looked good in the package, and when I first pulled it out, it was not disappointing. Then, on closer inspection, I startred noticing small 'issues'. The scales were poorly fit to the frame. The aluminum scale was poorly finished in areas the package covered. However, the blade opened, locked, and closed as they should. I've since used it as a back-up knife.

After a month, the pocket clip was loose. Low and behold, the two screws couldn't be tightened. Why? They were glued in because the screw holes we slightly over size. Then, within two weeks of that, the right side grip slab laminate seperated.

So, why does it get an 8 for value? It still opens, locks, and closes perfectly, holds a wonderful edge, sharpens easily, and best of all, only cost $10!

One of the best values going for an everyday carry/self defense knife. The ergonomics of this knife are superb. It seems whichever way I hold this knife, it melts into the grasp. I was suprised to see no reviews for what is a fabulous factory knife. Build quality is typical CRKT. Very good, but not custom, and as with many CRKT knives, many of the small screws work loose quickly. It locks up well, and releases easily, but only when I want it to. Exceptional value.

I have many knives from the last 20 years including Buck, Kershaw, and Schrade among others. I have to say that this knife is the one I choose to carry around every day. The function which allows you to lock the blade into the open position is awesome.

This knife is great. It holds an amazing edge and fits great in your hand. The only thing that i dont like is that it doesnt open 100% smooth after a few months of use but some WD-40 fixes that. Buy this knife. Its an amazing knife.

Comment by Matt   07/29/2012
WD-40 is not a lubricant. Try a drop of hoppes gun oil in the pivot next time. It will last longer and work better than WD-40 by a long shot. It's cheap too!

First off I love this knife. I have been looking for a small EDC automatic that met all my (possibly overly) specific needs. This is a small sized knife that you can easily palm. Great ergo and it is the perfect size to clip or just toss in your pocket. I wanted a light duty knife that I could open with one hand and close with one hand. The spearpoint edge is a beautiful looking design with a thin blade which is great for slicing and light use.
The fit and finish on the knife look great. The thing manages to be light as hell, yet still retain that feel of quality and worth that you get from your larger solid knives. Another aspect where you can feel the quality is when you press that button and that thing deploys hard and quick. It literally jumped out of my wife's hand the first time she opened it, so you want to make sure you are not limp wristing it. There are a couple cons I have found. As with almost all autos there is some blade play. There is no way to tighten it up so your only recourse is probably ship it back for a tune up. Another minor complaint is there is no jimping. Not a big problem since you probably should not be putting a ton of force into heavy cutting or sawing since this is more of a slicing blade style. However, the smooth coated aluminum can get slick so just having a little friction would really help. The last thing and I feel ridiculous even writing it but the font on the blade appears to be comic sans. I really feel like asking the man in charge of this decision wtf they were thinking. Overall great knife if your looking for a fun, solidly built little auto.

The youtube video was not produced by me. Give all praise and complaints to the producer.

Being a knife enthusiast, it's nice to come across a really good deal every now and then. I purchased several Kershaw Compounds through Woot's Daily Deal. I paid $12.00 each and gave two to my family to use. The models we received were the half serrated versions and that coupled with a generous belly on the blade made for excellent cutting abilities. The flipper mechanism opens with an audible snap and there's no blade play. We've been using these knives DAILY for several months now for a variety of tasks. I absolutely believe I couldn't find a better bargain for the price!

The feel of the knife in the hand is amazing, the knife is super solid. It is a major leap forward compared to the Manix 2 ( I own 1) the Manix XL grind FFG is much better than the hollow grind on the Manix 2 and the s30v is a better choice as well.
The handle is comfortable and the g10 along with the jimping on the liners makes sure it is not going to move.
Overall the manix 2 xl is my favorite knife out of my collection and will be with me for a long time to come.

I purchased my Manix 2 XL in Jan 2012 looking for a low cost alternative to the Strider SNG I had been using as EDC for the 1.5 years previous. I EDC'ed it from the time I acquired it. I quickly realized that for common everyday tasks, it was superior in nearly every way to the Strider. It still has its original edge and cuts effortlessly after 6 months. I also liked that it had the S30v FFG blade. The only gripe I have is with the size, for a folder its a big knife. This was the only area where the Strider excelled over the XL. Why didn't I just get the regular Manix 2 you say? Well, I'm just a sucker for flat grind blades.

Initially, it felt slightly odd as it had a definite presence where the Strider simply seemed unnoticeable in my pocket. I quickly became accustomed to it and don't have a problem at all with the size. The XL's large thumb-hole also makes for easy and fast deployment.

All in all I'm very happy with this knife and really have no drive to carry the SNG anymore. I highly recommend the Spyderco Manix 2 XL. Gave ergo a 9 for size.

This knife was given to me as a present in the mid 1990's and has been my general use pocket knife since then. It's served literally dozens of different purposes over the years and i've found the screwdriver, scissors, bottle opener and boring tool all useful numerous times. When I moved abroad and had to change all of the electrical plugs on my appliances I just used the small blade and the scredriver on this knife - very handy!
However, most of the time I use the cutting blades for a multitude of tasks - opening boxes, skinning electrical wires, shaving wood and other lightweight jobs. Forthese kind of tasks knife is very good, light and convienient. The blades hold their edge well and are tough enough for medium workloads without chipping. Having said that, it is a small knife and I wouldn't use it for heavy duty work as its not big enough and at some point you would probably snap a blade. Don't view that as a criticism this knife isn't designed for heavy work -its a small multi purpose pocket knife after all.
So, after 15 years of use its still serving me well, there is no wobble in the mechanism and it feels pretty much like new despite a minimal maintenance schedule of occasionally getting cleaned/oiled and sharpened when required. The only signs of use are a few scratches on the face of the cutting blades and chips in the plastic grip which is pretty good for the length of time I've had this.
I did only give it a score of 8 for ergos due to its small size and that getting blades out is a little fiddly. This is maybe unfair as solving these problems would require a bigger body and that defeats the purpose of having a small pocket knife.
Summing up, this has been a great litlle workhorse for me and I'd recommend it to anyone as a useful, small, everyday pocket tool. After all this time its still the knife I carry every day (I have several knives) and I think that says more than anything.

-Price Paid: $26.00

The Brawler is one of the better knives you can get for ~$25, especially for an assisted-opener.
The design certainly lives up to it's name- the black-finished blade, "legal switchblade" action, and stealth fighter angles make this a knife that will result in either compliments or worried looks if used in public.
The grip has a very appealing geometric pattern and offers a good hold. Though a little on the small side, it is comfortable and makes you instinctively hold it with a "fighting" grip. If you have very large hands this might not be your best choice.
The flipper spur is easy to activate, and the Speedsafe action delivers a fast draw every time. I suspect the blade may have loosened some in the 6 months I've had it, and there's now a noticeable but not drastic amount of play.
The 8cr13mov blade features an Americanized Tanto tip, known for it's armor-piercing capability. This has been enhanced with a thickened tip, making for an interesting if rarely-used feature. Strangely, the belt clip is tighter than a drone pilot's lips, but it can be removed with the right Torx bit (I don't recommend trying that with the pilot). Overall, it's a great knife for the money and will serve you well in EDC if you're after something just a little exotic.

I have a last ditch, it's small, but its not for opening envelopes.

Comment by jack   05/02/2013
Its to small... It is an "envelope opener". Good for a kids first knife.
