I absolutely love this knife! It handles boxes, rope, being a hammer and I've opened cans with it. I don't like the shape and the knife has a cheap feel to it, but it does the job and that's all you can ask. It's easy to hold when it's raining and I need to cut the reins so a runaway horse could get loose from some bushes and I've used it for a hammer a few times. So far it's lasted about three years, but there are cracks and breaks out of the plastic stuff on the handle from drops. If it had better uality materials on the handle than plastic I would grade the knife a better grade. Overall not too bad of a knife for small stuff. I'd personally give it a 10/10, but that would be my own bias review.

There isn't anything to dislike about this knife. It is sharp and stays sharp a long time. It is comfortable in my hands and my pockets. When I first bought it, it seemed expensive for what it is. Now that I have owned it a few years it seems like a good value. I have put the knife through hell and it has taken everything I could dish out and always came back for more.

This is a great edc knife. It is light and flat and very ergonomic to use. The s30v is great steel that holds an edge for a long time. The compression lock is smooth and super strong. This knife deploys very smoothly with the oversized hole. This is probably one of the best edc knives that you can buy. Buy one!! You will not be disappointed.

Nice ergonomics with a stout blade and better than average blade steel. Liner lock is very solid on this knife. All in all a great knife. One of the biggest sleepers around.

This is a great auto for the price. Not usually a fan of 154cm but it works on this. Lighting fast, gets razor sharp, and has good ergonomics. Only complaint is the blade gimping is relatively sharp.

This is a good knife. Great steel and micarta handle. Great warranty from Busse. The fit and finish is 8 out of 10. Not as precise as Esee but not bad either. I have handled 4 Ratmandu's. the edges on all of them were very thick and not ground evenly. They struggled to slice thru printer paper. I think most people into the Busse family of knives care mostly about their sturdiness and ability to take a lot of abuse. Which is ok however I think that a knife the size of Ratmandu should be a knife 1st and be able to cut rather well. Also worth noting that some folks reprofile/thin down the edge to make them cut better. This may not be something for a novice to be able to do. Another point to make is that the knife is a decent value but not a great value. Similar knives can be hand for half the cost. Ontario 5 is a good alternative. If you're on a tight budget, don't let the Busse cult fanatics talk you into buying ratmandu, there are tons of similar knives out there and even come with sheaths. Just my 2 cents.

This knife is the worst knife i have ever owned, you cannot sharpen it and it has NEVER held a sharp edge! !!!

Comment by Another Dude   04/05/2017
One of, if not the best knife for taking and holding an edge. I use a hard Arkansas stone and the 119 sharpens up nicely. Can drees an entire deer before it needs touched up.

Comment by Some dude   10/28/2016
One of the sharpest knives I own. What method of sharpening are you using ?

Over the course of time, I have owned most of the compact knives offered by Spyderco and Byrd. However, all of these "office friendly folders" have been traded away due to excess weight, lack of thumb jimping or the inability to be operated with one hand.

Then, by happenstance, I came across the Byrd "Tern". It differs from the "Cat" or the "Robin" in that it is not a back-lock, but rather a non-traditional slip-joint knife. Initially, this was a sticking point with me until I actually handled this folder. What I found is that the front finger choil, in conjunction with a stout back-spring and and excellent jimping, allows for an almost "locked" blade when in use. The 8Cr13Mov blade is large and thick enough for general EDC use, and comes razor sharp from the factory. While this alloy is not a super steel, it is more than adequate for any task that would be asked of this compact knife. As far as the weight goes, well, it seems lighter than my "go-to" Ka-Bar "Dozier". The G10 scales are ergonomically shaped with good traction. Also, I would be remiss in not mentioning the outstanding quality of this pocket knife. In short, the overall workmanship of the "Tern" rivals folders I own which cost six times as much. As a pertinent aside, a black wire pocket clip can be order directly from Spyderco, which I did. In my opinion, this extra measure of discretion is the perfect addition to an already great "office friendly folder". Finally, there is the Spyderco thumb hole versus the Byrd thumb hole debate. Well, in this case, the Byrd thumb hole wins out. With a bit of practice, it actually allows the user to close the knife with one hand.

All in all, the Byrd "Tern" is a must have where warranted by local laws...or for aficionados of smaller EDC knives!

Pleasantly surprised with this one. I like it same as the older alox model. Excellent ergonomics, i only would preferred plain edge, but i don't mind serrations much because those are easy to sharpen, and the tool combination is excellent. Maybe it is a more bulky for pocket carry, but with belt pouch it is perfect.

I really like this knife. I take it with me when I go camping. The large blade is perfect for food prep and is like having a foldable paring knife. The screwdrivers come in handy for fixing other gear that I carry. The can opener is top grade. The corkscrew is good for untying jammed knots, picking and getting old gaskets out of my stoves, and uncorking. The awl drills holes, sparks my fire steel and mends straps. Most everything on this knife is useful to me. The saw on this knife is very useful and safe to use. Swinging sharp blades in the woods far away from medical help is a trip destroyer for sure. Its nice having a tool that very comfortably and effectively takes care of alot of the chores I have to deal with on the trail. The quality is top notch.

A very well build and sturdy knife. Very sharp and easy to resharpen. The sheet is nice but the leather is to thin. I have made another leather sheet to replace the original one.

Love this knife. I have owned one for years. I like the straight edge drop point model. The flat ground blade is easy to sharpen and holds an edge fairly well. The handle is comfortable in the hand and tougher than it feels. The pocket clip is set up for deep pocket point up carrying and can be switched for right or left pocket. My only complaint is about the blade closed lock. It is in an awkward position for quickly unlocking but blocked it into the unlocked position with some glue and never had a problem. Overall this knife is affordable and reliable and a great choice for every day carry
