Being a collector of knives I found this knife an exceptional substitute for the Gerber made F.A.S.T. Knife which is prohibited from sale to anyone other than qualified emergency and authorized military personnel due to it's spring-assisted mechanism. This knife also has a spring-assisted mechanism however due to restrictions by law I received mine with the spring-assisted mechanism disabled. I purchased mine through a merchant on ebay for just over $40 which I felt was reasonable. The Gerber Answer has a 3.25 inch blade with a tanto point which offers greater penetration than a knife that has a standard drop point. It also has a partially serrated blade which allows aggressive cutting of materials which would otherwise be difficult with a standard blade. Handle is constructed well with an easy grip textured surface and the one I purchased was entirely matte black. I'm not sure whether Gerber offers the same knife with a sand blasted grey finish for the blade or whether black is the only color this knife comes in. I wouldn't give the Answer the highest marks but given the relatively low price I paid for it I feel it is well worth the buy. If you are willing to spend the extra dough Benchmade offers a similar knife to the aforementioned Gerber F.A.S.T. in the AFO II which you can buy for roughly an extra $100 than the Answer but again due to restrictions in the law the spring-assisted mechanism may be disabled by the seller prior to sale.

Use one of these knives for two weeks. Spring assist broke, and blade will not lock in open position. I don't feel this knife is worth the price of shipping to send it in. I'll never buy another Gerber knife.

as always, the quality if victorinox is amazing, i have a few letherman MTs but they seem a little uncomfortable for EDC because you need to open the pliers to get the rest of the tools out, this one you can just use it as any other victorinox, i really recomend this MT for EDC even if its a bit heavy.

What is there to say about the Victorinox Cadet that hasn't been said before? It's a great little knife made by a very well-respected company. I found 2 of them on clearance at my local Target, so I bought a red Alox and green Alox version. For the price I paid ($18 total) it was a steal! Even at regular price (about $18 each) it's still a great value. It comes with a knife blade, a nail file, a bottle opener/screwdriver, and a can opener/screwdriver. As soon as I got them home I easily got both blades up to a hair-shaving edge on my Sharpmaker. The fit and finish of both is fantastic, the Alox handles are comfortable, and the little Cadets just look great! They also have a key ring so you have many options for carrying them.

Overall, they're thin, light, inexpensive, and high quality. Can't go wrong at all with a Victorinox Cadet.... Or two.

The Needs Work is an interesting looking knife to say the least. i think it is well made with a very utilitarian blade shape that can get very sharp. the only reason i "dinged" it on the scale is that it has a rather fragile tip and the handle is thick, but that may differ on your perspective. i generally tend to prefer thinner handles. but if you dont mind that it would be a great buy.

2 years ago I found a great deal on SOGS. They had a limited run of Vulcan Tantos. So I bought 3. 2 Vulcan Mini Tantos for $80 a piece and a Vulcan Tanto for $90. One Mini and the full size are in the safe. I've carried a Mini for nearly 2 years full time. Work, play, anywhere I go I have my Vulcan. I've cut through 2x4s to dig out bullets. Cut wire, plastic, sheetrock, anything you can think of. The Tanto San Mai steel blade is near unbreakable. I've sharpened it once. ONCE. The Vulcans come with twin stainless liners and the Arc-Lok.

The Arc-Lok Is SOG's Ambi lock for thier knives and is good up to 1100 lbs of force. A bonus advantage I've found is that you can open it with a flick of the wrist, but you can also close it with a flick. This takes some practice but becomes near natural after awhile. I can also do this with gloves on. The Vulcan line of knives are some of the top knives you can buy.

I bought my Skyline at the local Wal-Mart because it was on clearance for $25 and is made in the USA. The first time I held it I found the grip profile to very comfortable. The blade is longer and thicker than I expected for this size of knife. I had some concerns about the single liner but after a few weeks of carry and working with it, the action has stayed tight with absolutely no play. The flipper is excellent and glass smooth. The G-10 scales are iron hard and I can't even get them to flex. The weight of this knife is feather light for the 3" blade. I went back and bought 2 more for fear of Kershaw discontinuing the Skyline. For everyday anything it's hard to beat the value and functionality of the Skyline.

Stonewashed S30V version

This is Ken Onions best and most original design.

The good: USA made, S30V stonewashed blade, Flat front half and recurve second half of blade, Draws in material and stays sharper longer due to the grind of the blade, Machined 3D G-10 aids in grip and asthetics, Fast strong speedsafe opening, Easily closed with one smooth arch of the thumb, Stud lock is reliable and strong with zero bladeplay, Safety switch is a nice touch if you need to store it(pretty child safe too).

The bad: A little heavy(5.4oz) to carry in light pants i.e. summer shorts or slacks, Clip is oversized and hard on the eyes, Thick handles are uncomfortable in the pocket, Takes some skill to sharpen due to the recurve of the blade.

Final words: Great to use, annoying to carry.

Heckler and Koch 14205 Snody Axis

Comments:

One of my favorite knife designs.

The good: Awesome design by Mike Snody, Excellent ergos, Axis Lock, 154CM steel, Smooth as butter operation, Great thumbstuds, Great clip, Standoffs can be used for lanyard.

The bad: Exposed tang when closed, Blade not polished to match liners, Clip not polished, G-10 could be grippier, knife came dull with a shallow edge.

The Spyderco Manix 2 Blue G-10/S30V Sprint Run

Personally, my favorite knife hands down.

The good: USA made, Perfect ergos, Strong lock, Flawless build quality(no tang exposure), Wide flat grind, Strong clip, All areas are polished, Smooth fast opening due to the pivot bearing system, large lanyard hole, S30V steel that came air bleeding sharp, and light for its size(4.2oz)

The bad: Too nice to use, for me. I am collecting this one.

As far as knives go this was a definite winner.

The good: Great ergos, smooth operation, Absolute control with the Spydiehole, No rough edges or surfaces(all polished), wide flat blade, easily sharpened, strong construction.

The bad: The blade steel could have been better. Maybe VG-10. After about 2 weeks of regular cardboard cutting it was butterknife dull. Nothing a good sharpening can't fix but it was tedious.

Overall: I am amazed at the quality of this knife for the price.

I've owned this knife for about 6 years now, and I have to say that it is THE best EDC anyone could ask for. The knife's cutting blades are made from a special blade steel with a Rockwell C (unit of hardness) of 56. The saws, scissors, and files have a hardness of RC 53, tin openers and reamers have RC 52, and corkscrews and springs have RC 49. The internal separating strips are made from aluminium alloy (to make them light), and the rivets and bushings are made of brass. The knife is very easy to sharpen and will hold that edge for awhile during light - medium duty use, but is capable of more heavy use. The woodsaw on mine has gotten dull near the tip, but still can fell saplings in under a minute. The metal saw / file is still in great shape and works equally well on plastics and stone. I even tend to use its can opener even when electric / cranking type are available. The only worthless tool on this knife is the "parcel carrier". There is just not enough hook to carry anything. Also, I wouldn't expect for the toothpick or twezzers to stay around forever, the red plastic covering will eventually fall off, taking the slots with it, but can be repaired with some gorilla glue ( I leave mine off, the rivets underneath aid with grip ). If you are looking for an exceptional EDC that will last you many, many years, both at home and in the bush, this is the knife for you.
